Stoops on Ferentz: ‘That’s why he gets paid all that money’

For the second week in a row, the opposing coach showed a little bit of wallet-envy towards Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

“Obviously he’s a great guy to work for,” Arizona coach Mike Stoops said Monday during his press conference. “They are consistent in what they do.

“That’s why he gets paid all that money.”

Ferentz was given a new contract before the season and now earns $3.675 million a year, the top rate in the Big Ten and one of the best nationally.

Last week Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads quipped about that new contract.

“I did text him the other day,” Rhoads said, “to ask him for a little spending money.”

Ferentz then responded on Tuesday.

“He should have sent it to my wife, that simple,” Ferentz said. “I’m like everybody else. You’re asking the wrong guy on that one. I’m up to $20 a week now. That’s my allowance. That’s pretty good.”

Stoops met with the media in advance of No. 24 Arizona’s showdown with No. 9 Iowa at 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. Last season Iowa beat Arizona 27-17 in Kinnick Stadium. The Wildcats led 10-7 before Iowa scored the next 20 points.

“We can’t make any of those fundamental mistakes this week against Iowa,” Stoops said. “We know this is a tremendous team in virtually every facet you look at.”

Stoops was asked if there was a talent gap between the Wildcats and the Hawkeyes.

“They are talented,” Stoops said. “You see a lot of NFL players on their team. They have talent at every level and every position that I look at.”

Stoops, who was an All-Big Ten safety for the Hawkeyes in the 1980s, will coach against his alma mater again Saturday.

“Last year was fun,” Stoops said. “I think any coach will tell you once the ball was kicked, it’s insignificant who you are playing. Sure it has meaning. I love their program and what they do. I work at Arizona now.

“That’s my alma mater. I wish them great success in everything they do … except for Saturday.”
