Hawkeyes finish off recruiting class

[ 0 ] April 26, 2011 |

Boone, Ia. — The last piece of Iowa’s basketball recruiting class has a 7-foot 2-inch wingspan and wide-ranging potential.

“As good as he is now, I think his best basketball is ahead of him,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said of Gabe Olaseni, a 6-foot-10 center from Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas who signed a letter of intent Tuesday. “We’re really excited about him.”

Olaseni is the fourth member of the class, joining junior college guard Anthony Hubbard, who signed Saturday, and preps Josh Oglesby, a guard, and Aaron White, a forward, who signed last fall.

McCaffery, appearing at the Boone-Story County  I-Club Tuesday, said all four newcomers will likely see minutes next season.

“We’re very happy with this class,” McCaffery said. “We wanted to make some noise early by getting some players you know are going to have an impact. We did that with Oglesby and White. Both can play right away.”

After signing them in the fall, McCaffery watched the development of his team to see what pieces were needed the most.

“I thought Hubbard was a great fit for what we were looking for,” McCaffery said. “Just his versatility and his body. And we wanted a big guy who is athletic, and we got that with Gabe.”

McCaffery  has one more scholarship open, but he plans to roll it over to the following class unless a player or transfer who fits with his system becomes available.
