Heelan suspends Iowa recruit Michael Malloy

[ 11 ] August 18, 2011 |

Iowa football recruit Michael Malloy, who attends Sioux City Heelan, is in trouble with the law.

The senior was charged on Aug. 8 with possession or use of drug paraphernalia, obstructing a police officer, second degree criminal trespassing, and operating a vehicle without lights, according to records from the Dakota County Attorney’s office.

“Michael has been suspended 20 days and that suspension starts (Thursday),” Heelan athletic director Jason Pratt said Thursday.

That means Malloy won’t play in the Crusaders’ first three games, starting Friday against Sioux City East.

“Michael violated our conduct code policy,” Pratt said.

Malloy, 18, rushed for 1,668 yards and 29 touchdowns last season.

College football coaches cannot comment on recruits until they sign a letter of intent. Malloy’s commitment to the Hawkeyes was verbal.

“Michael contacted Iowa and told them about the situation right away,” Pratt said. “I can’t speak for Iowa, but I hope it doesn’t affect his scholarship.”
