Updates on the Hawkeyes in the NFL over Labor Day weekend as teams cut down their rosters to 53 players by the deadline on Monday.
» A.J. Edds was cut by the Miami Dolphins on Monday.
The Dolphins had 10 linebackers on the roster, and couldn’t carry that many.
“I like some of the things A.J.’s done,” Miami coach Tony Sparano said in the Miami Herald. “Obviously, A.J. missed a chunk of time and we didn’t have a chance to evaluate him a year ago.”
Edds tore his ACL last fall and missed the entire season. Physically Edds was back, but the missed time hurt him with the Dolphins, per the Herald.
» Colin Cole was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday.
Cole had started 26 games over the past two seasons but had not practiced this fall and was expected to be placed on the physically unable to perform list.
» Sean Considine was cut by the Carolina Panthers on Monday, according to his agent Rick Smith.
Considine made five starts last year for the Jacksonville Jaguars with 52 tackles, one sack, one interception, and one forced fumble.
» Defensive back Brett Greenwood was among Pittsburgh Steelers cuts on Friday.
» Matt Kroul, who had moved to the offensive line, was cut by the New York Jets on Saturday.
» The Minnesota Vikings waived tight end Allen Reisner on Sunday, but he is expected to be put on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
» Derreck Robinson survived the first cutdown to 53 on Saturday for the Cleveland Browns, but was cut on Sunday after the team claimed three new players.
And some good news for some former Hawkeyes.
» Rob Bruggeman made the initial roster with the Atlanta Falcons, Seth Olsen with the Minnesota Vikings, and Mitch King with the New Orleans Saints. The three have fought to be on the 53-man roster for several seasons.
» Bryan Mattison, converted to center by the Baltimore Ravens, made their 53-man roster on Sunday.
But the Ravens did sign four-time Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode late Sunday to a one-year contract.
» All six Hawkeyes drafted this past spring made the 53-man roster for their respective teams, including Christian Ballard (4th round), Karl Klug (5th), Ricky Stanzi (5th), Julian Vandervelde (5th), and safety Tyler Sash (6th).
» The Detroit Lions cut punter Nick Harris Saturday, handing the job to undrafted rookie Ryan Donahue.
» Jeff Tarpinian, an undrafted free agent, made the 53-man roster for the New England Patriots despite missing most of camp with an injury.
» Scott Chandler is listed as the top tight end for the Buffalo Bills. He has one career catch over time spent with the Chargers, Giants, and Cowboys.
