Former Iowa football player Brett Greenwood was in stable condition in an Iowa City hospital late Friday after collapsing during a workout at his high school, according to a former coach.

“You don’t think something like that can happen to a guy like that,” Ed Morrissey said of the player he coached at Pleasant Valley High School.

Pleasant Valley athletic director Randy Teymer said Greenwood, who will turn 24 on Wednesday, was given CPR at the scene after collapsing at the school’s stadium Friday afternoon.

“I talked to him just before he started working out and he seemed fine to me,” Teymer said.

Teymer said Greenwood collapsed at 3<TH>p.m. School nurse Pam Cinadr and school trainer Jason Viel rushed to his aid.

Viel said the two administered CPR to Greenwood for five to 10 minutes. He added that Greenwood was hooked to a defibrillator and his heart was shocked one time.

Greenwood was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Bettendorf, where he was placed on a ventilator in intensive care. He was later transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

“It’s serious anytime your heart stops beating,” Viel said.

The scene was surreal to Cinadr, in her 16th year working at the school, who knew Greenwood as a student.

“It was a serious situation,” Cinadr said. “I really wasn’t afraid or nervous. I just needed to do what I had to do.”

Teymer was just as surprised at the turn of events after talking to Greenwood before the workout.

“He said he was back in town for a certain period of time and wanted to work out,” Teymer said.

Greenwood played defensive back at Iowa, where he was a four-year starter. His 12 interceptions tie him for sixth on the Hawkeyes’ all-time list.

He had signed a free-agent deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was released by the team last week after they trimmed their roster to 58 players.

Greenwood’s father, Dave, lettered for the Iowa State football team from 1974-76. He was an all-Big Eight offensive lineman as a senior.

“We’ll say our prayers and hopefully everything will turn out all right for him,” Morrissey said. “He’s a great kid.”
