Ferentz steps away from DJK question

[ 21 ] September 13, 2011 |

IOWA CITY, Ia. Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz said people will have to look elsewhere for the reason school career receiving leader Derrell Johnson-Koulianos isn’t on an NFL roster.

“I really don’t want to go into a dissertation with someone that didn’t finish the season, other than to say (that) typically players’ actions speak for themselves,” Ferentz said Tuesday.

“I haven’t slammed any player to anybody since I’ve been here.”
Ferentz’s response was to questioning from Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com, who said he was relaying concerns brought to him by Johnson-Koulianos.

“He reached out to me and said that he thinks you maybe have said some negative things about him that’s kept him out (of the NFL),” Howe told Ferentz during his weekly press conference.

Johnson-Koulianos was suspended before last year’s Insight Bowl after being arrested in December by Iowa City police on drug charges. He was not drafted.

“Don’t you think they look at everything?” Ferentz said of the scouting evaluation process. “When people ask me questions, I answer them. Nobody asked me a question about Derrell.”

Ferentz was annoyed the question even came up.

“It’s so irrelevant,” he said. “It’s so irrelevant. It’s so irrelevant.”

Johnson-Koulianos is the school’s career leader in receptions with 173 from 2007-10, and in receiving yards with 2,616.

“And the other thing I’d just add — I imagine most of the guys in NFL camps probably played in their last game as a senior on the team,” Ferentz said.

Johnson-Koulianos did not return a cell phone message left by The Register, but told WHO-TV:

“Multiple NFL sources have confirmed that I didn’t get great reviews from Iowa. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know.

“I would like you to know I want nothing but the absolute best for head coach Kirk Ferentz and everything Iowa. I move forward with hopes to have learned from the situation and I want all the parties to know that I mean that.

“I have endeavors that I’m plenty excited about. While I want nothing more but to get back on the field, I’m afraid those chances are no more.”
