Hawks lose LB Getz to injury

[ 1 ] September 13, 2011 |

The Iowa football team has lost a player to a season-ending injury in each of its first two games.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday that sophomore reserve linebacker Dakota Getz will miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee in the opening kickoff of Saturday’s 44-41 triple-overtime loss at Iowa State.

Ferentz said Getz had surgery Saturday evening.

“This is tough because he just came off another surgery from earlier this year,” Ferentz said of Getz, who is from Macon, Ill. “It’s obviously a disappointing time for him.”

The injury to Getz came a week after true freshman running back Mika’il McCall injured his ankle in the season opener against Tennessee Tech. Ferentz said there is a chance McCall could return near the end of season, but that he likely would be redshirted instead.

» On a positive front, Ferentz said senior defensive back Jordan Bernstine has recovered after missing the Iowa State game because of strep throat.

“He would have been fine Sunday,” Ferentz said. “But we didn’t play Sunday. So that didn’t help us (against Iowa State).”

Iowa football recruit Maurice Fleming said Tuesday on his twitter account that he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and will miss the remainder of his senior season.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Fleming attends Curie High School in Chicago. He suffered the injury in his team’s second game of the season while making a 20-yard punt return.

Fleming plays quarterback in high school, but is expected to switch to either defensive back or receiver at Iowa. He is among at least 10 high school seniors that have committed to Iowa.
