Iowa women lose player to Achilles tear

[ 0 ] September 16, 2011 |

Senior guard Megan Considine, who joined the Hawkeyes as a walk-on two years ago to provide depth, was lost for the season after injuring her Achilles in workout Friday.

Considine played limited minutes in her two seasons with the Hawkeyes but earned a full scholarship and was voted a team captain this season.

“We are saddened to lose Megan to an Achilles tear today in practice,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said in a release. “Megan’s leadership on the court and in practice situations will be missed, but she will be an inspiration to all of us from the bench.”

Considine joined the team in January of 2010 after several players went down with injuries. Last season she had 22 points, 18 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals in limited action.

Considine was hurt during a preseason workout on Friday; one day after sophomore forward Jade Rogers had surgery to repair her right knee. Rogers is expected to miss the season as well.

It is another blow to the depth for the Hawkeyes, who return four starters from the team that finished 22-9 last season.

Iowa had hoped to open fall practice with 14 healthy players, but now will hopefully start the fall with a dozen, including five true freshmen.

Sophomore Theairra Taylor is returning from her third ACL surgery, junior Jaime Printy had offseason wrist surgery, and junior Trisha Nesbitt is dealing with an ongoing foot injury.

Iowa opens the season on Nov. 6 with an exhibition game against Winona State.
