The process for delivering a brand-new, fan-friendly Cy-Hawk Trophy in time for next season’s game in Iowa City is under way.
Mindy Williamson, the communications and PR director for the Iowa Corn Growers Association, said the winning trophy idea will be announced at the Iowa and Iowa State spring football games in April.
With the design submitted by fans and voted on by fans, chances are the new trophy will receive a warmer reception.
Four days after Iowa Corn introduced a new trophy in August that featured a farm family around a bushel basket of corn, it was scrapped after overwhelming backlash.
“At the end of the day, we ended up listening to the fans,” Iowa Corn CEO Craig Floss said.
Iowa Corn asked fans to submit ideas for the new trophy. The top ideas are being drawn up and will be shown to a committee of former Iowa and Iowa State players, athletic department staff and Iowa farmers to narrow it down.
The top three or four ideas will be voted on by fans from March until April.
Williamson said they received about 500 entries. A few that were repeated multiple times included a trophy with Nile Kinnick and Jack Trice, a Corn Belt, and a trophy with school mascots Herky and Cy on top.
