Marble steps in for Cartwright during loss to UNI

Cedar Falls, Ia. — Iowa’s Devyn Marble saw point guard Bryce Cartwright struggling with a sore hamstring in practice the last few days.

So Marble wasn’t surprised at the team shootaround Tuesday morning when coach Fran McCaffery told him he was going to start at point guard against Northern Iowa that night.

“I’m always ready to play,” Marble said. “It didn’t bother me.”

Marble played 37 minutes in his first start of the season and seventh of his career. He led Iowa with 14 points and added four rebounds, four assists to two turnovers and two steals in a bizarre 80-60 loss at the McLeod Center.

“I thought he was great,” said McCaffery, who was ejected after receiving two technicals. “I’m really proud of him. He’s becoming the complete player he can be.”

Box score: Northern Iowa 80, Iowa 60

Marble was coming off one the best games of his career against Brown Saturday, scoring 11 points, grabbing seven rebounds, adding four assists to no turnovers and three steals.

“He did a great job of stepping in for Bryce,” Iowa senior Matt Gatens said. “He’s doing a great job of scoring and distributing the ball. We’re going to need more of that.”

Marble led a spirited second half charge that saw Iowa cut into a 32-27 halftime deficit with steals and success in the transition game. And then it all went south.

McCaffery and assistant Andrew Francis got technicals, then Zach McCabe another when play resumed for slapping the ball out-of-bounds. McCaffery later got his second technical and was kicked out of the game. All that paved the way for a 20-2 Northern Iowa run and erased one of Iowa’s best efforts of the season.

“The change of momentum went right to them,” Marble said. “It was kind of frustrating. As player, you have to play through it and let the coaches deal with that. You have to keep playing smart. I think we’re going to build on this.”
