Printy hopes to be back for senior season

[ 1 ] March 14, 2012 |

Iowa junior Jaime Printy hasn’t watched the play where she tore her ACL and never plans to.

“I don’t want to know,” Printy said. “Everyone that watched it said I just went to box out and planted wrong and she fell into me. I’ve never watched it, so I don’t know.”

The Hawkeyes’ leading scorer was hurt with seconds left in overtime Feb. 2 in Wisconsin.

“It felt the same as the first time, so I knew I did something,” Printy said. “But I was just trying to tell myself I didn’t.”

Iowa (19-11) has played seven games since Printy was hurt, winning six straight before losing in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament to Nebraska.

Printy still is the team’s leading scorer (16.9 points per game) and is second in points scored (388) only to junior center Morgan Johnson (447).

The Linn-Mar graduate said it was hard to sit out as the team made a late-season push for its fifth straight NCAA Tournament bid. Iowa (19-11) plays against California (24-9) on Sunday at South Bend, Ind.

“Obviously, it’s tough,” Printy said. “But at the same time, they are my teammates. I’m trying to do anything I can to help them win.

“I’m just real happy and proud of them.”

Printy has been on crutches for about five weeks and said she can just start to put a little weight on it for the first time next week.

If she wants to return for her senior season, it’ll be right about at the eight-month mark. Every ACL recovery is different, however.

“It’s a long process,” Printy said. “It’s a revision ACL, and the second one is a little slower than the first one. It’s still realistic.”

Printy still has a chance to finish among the top scorers in Iowa history. Next year’s senior class includes Johnson and Trisha Nesbitt.

The 2014 class consists of Theairra Taylor and Jade Rodgers.

“I can’t control it, somehow it’s in God’s plan for me,” Printy said. “So I’m going to keep trucking along, see where it gets me.

“Hopefully, I’ll be back for next season.”
