2016 Olympic Trials back in Iowa City?

[ 0 ] April 7, 2012 |

“Iowa City to London” has been a huge success, and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Wrestling Trials still are two weeks away.

But it is not too early to think about “Iowa City to Rio.”

Josh Schamberger, the president of the Iowa City-Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that USA Wrestling is interested in bringing the trials back to Iowa City in 2016.

“I think they’d like us to consider that,” Schamberger said. “I think there’s a real good chance; especially when we’re on our way to what looks like a sellout.”

Iowa City already broke the single-session and combined sessions attendance records last week with just more than 10,000 tickets sold.

Schamberger said Saturday there now are more than 11,000 tickets sold and hopes they can end up with a sellout April 21 and 22.

The success Iowa City/Coralville has enjoyed might open up opportunities other than just the 2016 Olympic Trials. There are World Team Wrestling Trials in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

“I’d take anything that would come to this town,” Schamberger said. “That’s what we do, my organization. Any time we can get something related to wrestling, we know we’re going to fill all the hotel rooms.

“We know the 9,000-plus that go to all the (Iowa) duals are going to be here. This state, this community, just loves its wrestling.”

The 2011 World Team Trials were June 9 to June 11 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Schamberger said there is a bid process they have to go through, and they have to make sure it works with the University of Iowa.

“This has been a lot of fun,” Schamberger said. “I know Tom and Terry (Brands) and the wrestling program love all of these events coming to town.”
