Former Iowa guard Matt Gatens hopes to open some professional eyes when he starts play Thursday in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, an NBA pre-draft camp in Portsmouth, Va.
Gatens, who averaged 15.2 points and earned second-team all-Big Ten honors in 2011-12, is one of 64 players taking part in the eight-team, three-game event which concludes Saturday.
“Everyone I’ve talked to said to play hard, play defense, shoot it when you’re open and don’t do anything you’re not accustomed to doing,” said Gatens, who started all 128 games of his Hawkeye career. “I’d love to impress some scouts and get invited to some workouts.”
Gatens, who shot 41 percent from 3-point range and 85.4 percent from the free-throw line as a senior, has not hired an agent yet but plans to meet with several of them in Portsmouth.
The native of Iowa City ended up seventh on Iowa’s career scoring list with 1,635 points. He joined Roy Marble as the only Hawkeye players to finish with more than 1,500 points, 400 rebounds, 250 assists and 125 steals for their careers.
