Former Iowa basketball standout Matt Gatens worked out for the Washington Wizards Tuesday, and he’s got five more visits lined up before the June 28 NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-5 guard will fly cross-country to work out for the Phoenix Suns today, followed by visits to the Portland Trailblazers on Saturday, the Milwaukee Bucks on June 19, the Chicago Bulls June 20 and the Golden State Warriors June 24.
Gatens has been training for the upcoming workouts in Los Angeles, Calif., where the Wasserman Media Group is located. Gatens hired former Iowa guard B.J. Armstrong and his partner, Jason Ranne, who both work for Wasserman, to represent him last month.
“Los Angeles was good,” Gatens said. “I had some good exposure. At one workout, there were 28 teams there to watch us. Things went well. I shot it well. Right now six teams are showing interest.”
Gatens, who shot 41 percent from 3-point range as an Iowa senior, said that part of the game might be the best way for the Hawkeyes’ No. 6 all-time leading scorer to make an NBA roster.
“In order to get a spot in the league, you have to prove you can shoot it,” Gatens said. “That’s what most teams are looking for. I’ve been putting an emphasis on my shooting.”
