D.M. Lincoln’s Young commits to Hawkeyes

[ 1 ] June 24, 2012 |

The Des Moines Lincoln-Iowa Hawkeye pipeline continued Sunday night.

“I’m calling coach (Reese) Morgan right now,” Railsplitter linebacker Trevon Young said Sunday night, referring to the Iowa defensive line coach.

“I’m accepting their scholarship.”

The high school senior-to-be selected Iowa over an offer from Iowa State. Two other former Lincoln stars played at Iowa – defensive back Jordan Bernstine and running back Adam Robinson.

“It was real close between  Iowa and Iowa State,” Young said. “I just went with what I felt was best for me.”

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Young had 61 tackles and two fumble recoveries last season. He said he likely will grow into being a defensive lineman – possibly a defensive end.

“They said they’re going to put another 30 pounds on me,” he said.

Also committing to Iowa Sunday, according to various Internet recruiting services, was Cedar Falls quarterback Ike Boettger, who likely will end up a tight end.
Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz has 14 known early commitments for the Class of 2013.

“Trevon came into high school thinking he wanted to be a basketball player,” Lincoln coach Tom Mihalovich recalled. “I told him that’s good, but that I wanted to give him options.”

That option resulted in a Division I scholarship.

“I still like basketball,” Young said, “but once I started growing, I started to out-grow basketball. I knew that football was going to be my sport.”
