Printy practicing, not full speed just yet

Okay, where is No. 24, and how is she feeling?

The Iowa women’s basketball team had its first practice of the 2012-13 season on Monday. Senior Jaime Printy was on the court, but not fully cleared following her ACL surgery in February.

“She did a good job,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said Monday after practice. “She got through two hours of practice before she had to come out when she started to get sore.

“She did more than she through she was going to do.”

Bluder said that Printy — who is 11th on Iowa’s career scoring list despite missing the final eight games last season — is cleared for half-court drills, but not full court 5-on-5 yet.

“I feel very optimistic she will be in uniform on Nov. 9,” Bluder said. “She is right on track.”

Iowa opens the season on Nov. 9 against Northern Illinois.

As expected, sophomore guard Kathryn Reynolds will take a redshirt this season. She had a second surgery this past week after tearing her ACL in April.

“She did not have her ACL surgery until last Thursday,” Bluder said. “She had some complications with her first one.”

Bluder also said that incoming freshman Nicole Smith, a 6-4 post from Rockton, Ill., will also miss part of the season with a knee injury.

Smith had ACL surgery in March, but had a screw coming loose and needed a follow-up procedure a couple weeks ago.

“It’s a minor setback, but puts her further behind,” Bluder said. “Her status is up in the air. We won’t make a decision until November.”

Sophomore guard Melissa Dixon and freshman guard Claire Till both had injuries this summer, but both were on the court on Monday.

Iowa returns four starters — Printy, Dixon, senior center Morgan Johnson, and sophomore guard Samantha Logic — from a team that went 19-12 last season.

It was the sixth straight season the Hawkeyes made the NCAA Tournament.

Iowa welcomes five newcomers — JUCO transfer Kathy Thomas, a sophomore, and freshmen Smith, Till, Kali Peschel and Kayla Timmerman.

“Its really enjoyable how much our veterans bring along the freshmen, mentoring them,” Bluder said.

Iowa women’s basketball media day is Oct. 17.
