Iowa picked up a big non-conference win Sunday over No. 12 West Virginia 79-70, and can grab another one today in Tallahassee, Fla.
Iowa (5-2) faces Florida State (5-0) in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge at 6 p.m. today.
“I think this is the best opponent we’ve seen so far,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. “And it’s on their home court. Our toughest road test so far.”
Florida State has about the best RPI of any team Iowa has on its schedule this year. Florida State is ranked sixth at realtimerpi.com. Ohio State is ranked fifth (Iowa hosts on Jan. 3).
Iowa is ranked 70th currently. And that’s after a 79-70 win over No. 12 West Virginia on Sunday.
That win came after a last-second loss to Florida International on their home court two days before. That loss to FIU (3-2) is already being labeled a “bad loss” at collegerpi.com. FIU is ranked 210th in RPI.
“That was not a good game for us,” Bluder said. “I was happy with the way the seniors were able to help us move on.”
Iowa has struggled with turnovers in its two losses, 77-64 to North Carolina and 66-65 to Florida International. Iowa has averaged 20.8 turnovers in their last six games.
“We’re still turning the ball over too many times,” Bluder said. “Our defense has been good enough it hasn’t really hurt us, but it’s something we need to work on.”
The Seminoles feature a match-up zone defense that will put pressure on the Iowa ball-handlers.
“Their defense is very good,” Bluder said. “It is a style we haven’t seen this year.”
The Florida State defense has 53 steals on the season (10.6 per game).
Junior forward Natasha Howard leads the Seminoles with 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Senior guard Leonor Rodriquez also averages 16.0 points, senior forward Chelsea Davis 15.0 ppg, senior forward Chasity Clayton 13.6 ppg, and senior guard Alex Deluzio 12.2 ppg.
“Florida State is a team that’s for real,” Bluder said. “They are a senior-dominated team.”
