John Streif, one of the most popular members of the University of Iowa athletic department for decades, has announced his retirement.
Streif served as assistant athletic trainer for 40 years and added the position of travel coordinator in 1980. He also has served as a member of Iowa’s Athlete Assistance Program. His retirement is effective Jan.2.
“John Streif is probably the nicest and most genuine person I’ve ever met,” former Iowa football star Adrian Clayborn wrote on Twitter. “Happy retirement!”
A native of Manchester, Ia., and a 1970 Iowa graduate, Streif joined the Iowa staff after serving as assistant athletic trainer at West Point Military Academy from 1970-72.
“To think that I came to Iowa as a student in 1966, and have been a part of this department for so long, it’s been a great experience,” Streif said. “I feel so fortunate to have been involved with the University of Iowa and this department.”
A scholarship in Streif’s name was established by former Iowa basketball players in 1994. The athletic training facilities in Carver-Hawkeye Arena are named in honor of Streif, after a $100,000 gift from former Iowa basketball player Ronnie Lester.
“His dedication to the Hawkeyes is legendary, and I’m honored to name the training room for him,” Lester, a Los Angeles Lakers assistant general manager, said in 2009.
Iowa athletics officials are planning a celebration and recognition event in honor of Streif.
