Iowa women’s basketball went to the Great White North to find their latest recruit, getting a verbal commitment from 5-foot-11 wing Christina Buttenham.
Buttenham attends St. Mary’s High School in Hamilton, Ontario. She also played for the national U17 team when she wasn’t playing for Team Ontario during the summer season.
She was seen by Iowa coaches at an exposure tournament event in the states, and Buttenham said that when the recruiting opened Sept. 1, both she and her parents got emails from the Iowa coaches.
Buttenham visited Iowa on Dec. 1, and she said she gave her verbal commitment Dec. 23.
“When we came home from our visit, I wanted to commit,” Buttenham said. “Dad wanted to read up on something.”
Buttenham said she received about 65 emails from college coaches and about 12 to 15 offers. She also made a few other visits but didn’t want to name schools.
She drove 11 hours from Hamilton to Iowa City for her visit and found everything to her liking.
“I was so comfortable with everyone,” Buttenham said. “They were so welcoming. And their facilities are so great. I had a great feeling when I was on campus. The sciences are one of their best academic courses. Everything was just right.”
Buttenham enjoyed watching Iowa on the Big Ten Network beat Ohio State in overtime Thursday night.
“I could picture myself playing there,” Buttenham said.
A 5-11 wing, Buttenham also is a 3-point shooter.
She’ll be the first international player for Bluder at Iowa.
Buttenham played on the Canadian U17 Team Ontario this past summer after playing for the U15 Team Ontario the previous two years. The U15 team won nationals both years.
She also played for the Canadian U17 national team at the FIBA U17 World Championships in Amsterdam.
Buttenham joins 5-foot-5 point guard Whitney Jennings of Logansport, Ind., in the 2014 class for Iowa.
