Melsahn Basabe might have played his way back into the starting lineup.

Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery said on his weekly radio show Monday that Basabe has earned the right to start, and that decision will be made in the next few days of practice.

Iowa had Monday off, but will return to practice Tuesday to start preparations for Thursday’s home game with Penn State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.

Basabe, a junior forward, has 52 career starts. He started all 31 games as a freshman and 21 last season. Basabe is Iowa’s fourth-leading scorer in Big Ten play, averaging 7.9 points and 4.0 rebounds. If he starts, Basabe would likely replace freshman Adam Woodbury in the post.
