IOWA CITY, Ia. – Iowa freshman point guard Mike Gesell injured his left ankle early in the second half of Saturday’s game at Nebraska, which may have played a factor in the Hawkeyes’ 64-60 loss.

“It’s bothering him a little bit,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said Monday.

Gesell played 16 second-half minutes Saturday in his return to his home state. He made just one of six second-half shots. After six assists in the first half, he had none in the second half.

“That’s always going to have an impact,” McCaffery said. “An injury that takes place during a game, you never really know. Sometimes you can play through it and it doesn’t really hurt you until after the game.”

Gesell doesn’t know exactly how he got hurt.

“I just came down on it wrong,” Gesell said. “I don’t even know if I stepped on someone’s foot. It wasn’t really hurting when I was in the game.”

Gesell said he’ll continue to get treatments on the ankle leading up to Wednesday’s game against Purdue at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“Just something I’ve got to tough out,” Gesell said.
