Iowa wrestlers were 6-for-6 in the second round of the NCAA wrestling tournament before heavyweight Bobby Telford lost on an injury default. But first place Penn State also had a big round, with several wrestlers rolling up bonus points.
The Nittany Lions led Oklahoma State, 32.5-29, after day 1 action was complete.
In third place was Minnesota with 24 points, followed by Iowa with 22 points, then Oregon State with 16 points. Iowa State and Northern Iowa — both in the top 5 earlier in the day — dropped out of the top 10.
The Nittany Lions scored bonus points in four of their six matches in the second round, with a major decision from Dylan Alton at 157, followed by pins from David Taylor (165), Matthew Brown (174) and Edward Ruth (184).
Oklahoma State, meanwhile, notched bonus points in three of seven matches, with two major decisions and a pin.
Minnesota went 5-3 in the second round, but scored two pins and a major decision.
Iowa won 6 of 7 matches, but couldn’t keep up with the leaders in bonus points. The Hawkeyes had one major decision and a pin.
