Big Ten football realignment has left traditional league powers Ohio State and Michigan off Iowa’s 2014 schedule.
The Hawkeyes will play Indiana at home Oct. 11 and travel to Maryland Oct. 18 in its two East Division games next season.
Iowa plays four of its first six league games on the road before finishing the regular season with home games against Wisconsin and Nebraska. The Big Ten doesn’t begin nine-game conference schedules until 2016. The 2015 schedule hasn’t been released.
Iowa will play five games in November in 2014, but just two in October because of bye weeks on Oct. 4 and Oct. 25.
Iowa has never played Maryland in football before. The Terrapins and Rutgers join the Big Ten in 2014, which brought about realignment to more of a regional concept. Every team team in the West Division is in the Central time zone but Purdue.
The divisional concept will replace the Legends and Leaders divisions that had been used in the past.
“I’m glad to tell you we’re in the West Division,” Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz told the Nile Kinnick I-Club Wednesday night in Council Bluffs. “I was struggling with the other one a little bit.”
