Vegas: Hawkeyes a four-point underdog vs. ISU in early line

[ 0 ] June 7, 2013 |

The Iowa State football team has never been an oddsmakers’ darling. So it was certainly no surprise Friday morning when the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas threw down some very, very early betting lines on 250 college games this fall, and the Cyclones were the underdogs — usually decidedly — in six of the seven games in which they were listed.

The lone exception? At home against rival Iowa on Sept. 14. Iowa State is a four-point favorite to win its third consecutive game against its in-state rival, according to the Golden Nugget. If that holds, it’ll be the first time since 2000 that the Cyclones were favored to beat the Hawkeyes.

In general, homefield advantage is thought to be worth 3.8 points in college football, so all that’s saying is that the game is a tossup in the eyes of oddsmakers. Which, of course, it is, since kickoff is still three months away.

But college football fans, and gamblers, have insatiable appetites for year-round talking points about the sport. A Register story Wednesday predicted that Iowa and Iowa State would be favored in only three of their 12 games.

The Golden Nugget has the Hawkeyes listed as an underdog (including three times at home) in the six games it listed.

Here are some other preliminary betting lines for the underdog Cyclones and Hawkeyes, courtesy of the Golden Nugget:
