NORTH LIBERTY — Junior guard Kathy Thomas left the Iowa women’s basketball team Tuesday afternoon in search of greener pastures.
Thomas said Wednesday after her Game Time League game that she felt this was the best basketball decision for her.
“I just felt like I deserved more playing time,” Thomas said. “Sam (Logic) is a great player. It’s hard to be behind someone that’s a great player.”
Sam Logic is Iowa’s all-Big Ten point guard who played a team-high 34.2 minutes per game a year ago and returns this year as a junior.
Thomas played in 32 of 34 games. She averaged 6.5 minutes per game, mostly <FZ,1,0,6>backing up Logic at the point. She averaged 1.6 points, 0.8 rebounds and had 17 assists and 12 steals.
A native of Flint, Mich., Thomas came to Iowa after a year at Highland Community College in Kansas.
She was waiting for her official release before talking to schools, but expected to find a place closer to home.
Thomas had nothing but good things to say about the coaches and program she was leaving behind.
“My confidence has grown, I just want to be a better player,” Thomas said. “The coaches are good coaches. The girls are intelligent young ladies. It was just a decision I made for basketball.”
Iowa will return eight other players and adds Kathryn Reynolds — who is coming off an ACL injury — and two freshmen for the 2013-14 season. Iowa finished 21-13 last season.
