Former Hawkeye and Little Hawk Matt Gatens is on the 2013 Orlando Magic Summer League Roster.
Matt Gatens is part of an 18-player roster for Orlando that will play in the 2013 Orlando Pro Summer League from July 7 to 12.
“They called my agent about a month ago, we took it, and here we are,” Gatens said Wednesday from Orlando, Fla. “It’s a good opportunity to get in front of scouts from teams here and overseas.”
The six-day event features 10 NBA teams playing 25 games. The event is not open to the public.
The 6-foot-5 guard is one of four players on the Magic roster invited after playing last season overseas.
Gatens played for UCAM Murcia in the Spanish League. The final game of his season was May 19.
“It was a great experiences overseas,” Gatens said. “I don’t know about next year (in Spain) if nothing happens here. I don’t know where I’ll end up. It’s a wait and see game.”
Gatens played in 33 games for UCAM Murcia and averaged 7.1 points per game. He had 49 3-pointers that he shot at a team-best 37.4 percent clip.
Gatens finished his Iowa career in 2012 ranked sixth in career scoring (1,635). He played last year in the NBA summer league for Phoenix.
He understands this is a big chance to realize his NBA aspirations.
“You’ve always got to take these opportunities seriously,” Gatens said. “Last year I made of the most of it and played hard and played well during these games.”
