Iowa athletics director Gary Barta said Monday that it’s fair to criticize the Iowa football team for finishing 4-8 last season.
But to rank Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz among the five worst coaches in college football, which Stewart Mandel from Sports Illustrated did recently, is laughable in Barta’s opinion.
“The simple answer is I’ll just disagree,” Barta said Monday. “Obviously, people know how I feel about Kirk. But in fairness to the criticism if there is any fairness in that statement, which is crazy, we were 4-8 last year. So for last year, we didn’t get it done.
“But Kirk is a great leader. It’s laughable for him to be considered one of the worst coaches in America. I’ll make an argument that he’s one of the best coaches in America. He’s on my list as one of the best in the country at any time, understanding that 4-8 isn’t acceptable.”
Barta showed his respect for Ferentz by signing him to a 10-year guaranteed contract that expires after the 2019 season. Last season marked the first time since 2000 that Iowa failed to become bowl-eligible with six victories under Ferentz.
