Ryan Bowen’s trip across the country, courtesy of the NBA, continues.

The former Fort Madison High School all-stater and University of Iowa forward (1995-1998) was named an assistant coach and director of player development for the Sacramento Kings Wednesday.

Bowen spent 10 NBA seasons as a player with Denver, Houston, New Orleans and Oklahoma City, as well as one season overseas in Turkey and Israel.

Bowen retired and got into coaching at his alma mater. He was hired by Fran McCaffery as the Hawkeyes’ video coordinator and administrative assistant in the spring of 2010, but left in December of 2011 to join George Karl’s Denver staff. Bowen did scouting, coaching and video work for the Nuggets. Karl was fired in June, and Bowen was looking for a new job.

“I think he would have been a terrific college coach,” McCaffery said when Bowen left Iowa for the NBA. “He’ll be a terrific pro coach. Obviously, he has a reputation (in the NBA) already. I think he’ll be in the pro game for a very long time and be very good at it. I would not be surprised – in fact, I expect it – that he will be a head coach. He has that ability. It will just take a little time.”

Bowen scored 1,090 points at Iowa, and is 34th on the school’s career scoring list. He had career averages of 9.1 points and 6.7 rebounds, playing for coach Tom Davis. He also holds the Hawkeyes’ career record for steals (208) and ranks fourth in blocked shots (124) and eighth in rebounding (804).

“Everyone asks me, “What was it like to live out your dream to play in the NBA?’ ” Bowen said in May of 2010, shortly after McCaffery hired him. “I tell them, “My dream was to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes. To be able to come back is really special.’ ”

But Bowen never hid his desire to coach in the NBA some day, and the opportunity to do so with Denver was enough to pull him away from his alma mater.

On Wednesday, he moved a step closer to making McCaffery’s prediction a good one – a future NBA head coach.
