Bad news after a rough season opener for the Jacksonville Jaguars means good news for Ricky Stanzi.
The former Hawkeye quarterback was named Jacksonville’s backup on Monday after starter Blaine Gabbert needed 15 stitches for a “laceration sustained to his throwing hand” during Sunday’s 28-2 loss to Kansas City.
With Gabbert out for at least a week, Chad Henne was named starter for Week 2 and Stanzi as his direct understudy.
According to coach Gus Bradley on Jaguars.com on Monday:
Bradley said he didn’t yet know if the team will sign an additional quarterback. Third-year veteran Ricky Stanzi, signed off waivers shortly before the preseason finale, is the third quarterback on the depth chart, and rookie free agent Matt Scott is on the practice squad.
“(General Manager) Dave (Caldwell) and I will discuss those things, but right now, Ricky will be the guy getting multiple (additional) reps,” Bradley said.
Stanzi did not take a regular season snap in two seasons with Kansas City. He was released on Aug. 25, part of rosters cuts in the preseason.
His most recent action was a 5-of-12 performance in Week 1 of the preseason against New Orleans. The Ohio native logged 51 total yards in that appearance.
Jacksonville’s fourth quarterback on the current depth chart is Denard Robinson. The Jaguars play at Oakland on Sunday.
