IOWA CITY – Dropped passes have made Don Shumpert a target of second-guessers.
Tuesday, Iowa’s senior receiver addressed the media, and never flinched.
“I’ve just got to concentrate more, make the makeable plays,” Shumpert said. “Just do what I do every day in practice, and take it over to the game.”
This week’s game is against Iowa State, which will draw an intense spotlight.
Shumpert, a senior from St. Louis, has caught four passes this season for 42 yards, but those outside the Hawkeye football offices tend to focus more on the opportunities that were bobbled.
“If you have a perfect week in practice, you’re more confident in the games,” Shumpert said.
Shumpert was asked if there was something coaches could have him work on, or if certain routes made his job more difficult.
“You’ve just got to concentrate and catch it,” he said, “hopefully get some yards after the (catch).”
TROPHY GAME: It doesn’t sound like Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is going to use the Cy-Hawk Trophy as a motivational tool.
Iowa State has won it the last two years.
“You’d just like to think college football players understand,” Ferentz said. “Maybe this will change with the proposed playoffs and all that stuff, but in football every game counts for so much.
“A trophy is a tangible symbol, that maybe you don’t have with some other games, but they’re all important.”
SAMPLE SIZE: How much footage is enough, when it comes to scouting an opposing quarterback.
The Cyclones have played just one game this season, but quarterback Sam Richardson appeared in the final three games of 2012.
“That’s always helpful,” Ferentz said. “But they’ve got two on Jake (Rudock). So, yeah, the more tape you have on players is always good.
“At least we have a couple on hand, but there are a lot of guys we don’t have film on.”
INJURY REPORT: Defensive back Maurice Fleming remains questionable this week, still recovering from a leg issue.
“He dressed last week,” Ferentz said, “but he never really got to full speed.”
The status of Jordan Lomax (hamstring) is also up in the air.
“We’ll probably know more by Thursday,” Ferentz said. “We expect him to practice partial today and the hopefully the whole thing tomorrow, unless he goes backwards.”
