Top Iowa recruit Tyler Ulis makes his college choice

[ 0 ] September 13, 2013 |

Tyler Ulis, a 5-foot-9 senior point guard from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Ill., announced Friday that he will play his college basketball at Kentucky next season. Iowa and Michigan State were his other two finalists.

Ulis, whose announcement was broadcast live on the Chicago Sun-Times’ high school sports website, visited all three schools in the last two weeks. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, one of the first to offer him a scholarship in the summer of 2012, also made a home visit to Ulis on Tuesday.

Kentucky came in late after its top choice at point guard, Emmanuel Mudiay, selected SMU. Kentucky offered Ulis on August 16, while he was making an unofficial visit to the Lexington campus. Ulis is ranked  the 29th-best prospect in the nation by Scout, 33rd by Rivals and 38th by ESPN.

James Ulis, Tyler’s father, told the Louisville Courier-Journal earlier this week, “We’ve known Fran for a long time, and I call him my friend. He’s a great guy and Tyler has really gotten to know him. You can’t just throw that out the window. And the same with (Michigan State coach Tom) Izzo. But ultimately, it’s going to be about what’s best for Tyler.”
