Ed Podolak miffed at odd coaching move

[ 0 ] September 14, 2013 |

AMES, Ia. — Ed Podolak was in his usual spot Saturday, working as a radio analyst alongside Gary Dolphin on the Hawkeye Radio Network.

A year ago, Greg Robinson was working as a radio analyst and volunteering as an assistant coach at a high school in California. Before this season, Texas coach Mack Brown hired Robinson as a football analyst. And last week, Brown fired defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and replaced him with Robinson.

“That’s really a stretch, to think that you could go from being a radio analyst to taking over as a defensive coordinator,” Podolak said before Saturday's Iowa-Iowa State game. “It defines the situation this Texas program is in right now. I’m at a loss for words to explain that happening.”

Podolak admits to wishing a certain play call was made in a certain situation during his time as an analyst.

“But I’m removed from it,” Podolak said. “I’ve got a good seat. And there’s no pressure. But there are times when you say, “Gosh, I wish I would have gone here.’ ”
