We’re not trying to jinx the Hawkeyes, really.
But five games into the season, Iowa has had just one starter – cornerback Jordan Lomax – miss a game because of an injury.
“Knock on wood,” coach Kirk Ferentz said. “So far, so good. It sure helps.”
The Hawkeyes have run the gamut when it comes to the injury bug.
In 2002, Iowa’s lineup remained mostly intact during an undefeated run through the Big Ten Conference. Two years later, the Hawkeyes were struggling to maintain a healthy running back, but still managed to win a share of the title.
“It’s critical every year,” Ferentz said. “You know, just like wind impacts a game, I think injuries impact any team, especially teams like us.”
Senior linebacker Christian Kirksey leads Iowa with 30 consecutive starts, followed by safety Tanner Miller’s 28.
Offensively, right tackle Brett Van Sloten and receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley have each made 17 straight starts.
