Missouri RB commits to Hawkeyes

[ 0 ] November 5, 2013 |

The Iowa football program’s reputation for featuring running backs has helped to land one of the best high school players at the position in Missouri.

Markel Smith announced on Twitter on Monday that he has committed to Iowa. He then explained why to HawkeyeInsider.com.

“It’s like a wide receiver going to a school that throws the ball all the time,” said Smith, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound native of Kirkwood, Mo.

Smith, who was previously committed to Missouri, said his relationship with the Iowa coaches also was a big factor in him picking the Hawkeyes, who play at Purdue on Saturday.

“I talk to the coaches all the time and they care about me more as a person than as a football player,” Smith said.

Smith is ranked as a four-star recruit by Scout.com and is the No. 21 running back in the country. He is believed to be the 16th player to commit to Iowa’s 2014 recruiting class, all of whom are high school seniors.

Smith set a Missouri state record with a 541-yard, seven-touchdown performance earlier this season.

The Iowa coaches are prohibited from commenting on a specific recruit before the recruit has signed a national letter of intent. The national signing period will start on Feb. 5.

Smith committed to Missouri in November, but decided to explore other options in April. He picked Iowa despite Missouri’s 8-1 record and despite the fact that Iowa’s top four running backs will return next season.

“That really didn’t matter to me,” Smith said about Iowa’s depth at running back. “It’s not about what they do. It’s about what you do.”
