Hawk women enjoying the comforts of home

[ 0 ] November 16, 2013 |

The expression is “home sweet home.”

Home has certainly been sweet for the Iowa women’s basketball team of late.

Iowa has won 14 of its last 20 games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, including an NCAA tournament game last year and three straight to open this season.

The Hawkeyes will attempt to continue that home court success when they host Stony Brook at 1 p.m. today in its last home game until Dec. 5.

“This is important because this is the last time we are in Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a while,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. “Our next five games will be away from home so I think it’s really important that we have a good win against Stony Brook.”

Iowa has won their last two games in very different fashions.

The Hawkeyes scored the seventh most points in school history in a 97-93 overtime win over No. 14 Dayton last Sunday.

Iowa then held Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 38 points, the fewest by an Iowa opponent in 19 years, in a 76-38 win Wednesday.

The 38 points were the fewest by an Iowa opponent under Bluder and the fewest by an Iowa foe since Michigan scored 36 in 1994.

Following today’s game, Iowa will play five straight games away from home beginning with a road game Wednesday at Colorado.

Iowa then will play at Northern Iowa on Sunday before playing three games in Cancun.

“We need to get ourselves better,” Bluder. “We need to continue to grow, continue to get better no matter who we are playing against we need to get better because next week, it gets pretty tough going to play at Colorado and at UNI.”
