This week’s Big Ten Football Buzz

[ 0 ] November 20, 2013 |

— Ohio State will be a heavy favorite to win a school-record 23rd consecutive game Saturday when it hosts Indiana.

The Hoosiers are 10th in the Big Ten in rushing defense at 253.3 yards a game, meaning Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde will have a great chance to improve on the career-best 246 yards he rushed for against Illinois last week.

Hyde had five touchdowns against the Illini – four on the ground, one reception – the first Big Ten player to do that since Mikel Leshoure of Illinois in 2010.

— Attendance at Big Ten games has surpassed the 5-million mark for a ninth consecutive season and the 11th time overall.

— Wisconsin rushed for 554 yards against Indiana last week, which ranks eighth all-time in Big Ten history.

— Iowa linebacker James Morris is the only Big Ten player with at least 80 tackles, four sacks and three interceptions this season.

Wisconsin (8-2, 5-1) at Minnesota (8-2, 4-2) , 2:30 p.m. (ESPN) – This looked like a yawner of a game at the start of the season. It still did when the Gophers started Big Ten play with one-sided losses to Iowa and Michigan. But Minnesota has run off four straight wins to set the table for the biggest league game in the Twin Cities since Tony Dungy was taking snaps for the Gophers. Wisconsin’s rush defense will challenge Minnesota’s run-first offense. And the Gophers will be challenged by a Wisconsin rushing game that averages 306.5 yards a game. This game will feature a trio of backs averaging triple figures rushing versus Big Ten foes: Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon (123.8) and James White (118.7) and Minnesota’s David Cobb (101.7).
