Iowa’s men’s basketball team was ranked 23rd in the Associated Press poll released today. It’s the first time the Hawkeyes have appeared in an AP poll since they were 15th in the final poll of the 2006 season.
“I’m just happy for the players,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said today. “I guess in some ways it creates more interest and more people talk about you, and that’s always good. But I don’t think about it very much. I’m just thinking about the next game. Because if you lose two or three games, then you’re out. Then they talk about you not being ranked because you were.”
Iowa, 5-0, plays Xavier Thursday in the first round of the Battle for Atlantis in the Bahamas. That field includes No. 2 Kansas, Villanova, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Texas-El Paso and USC.
“When you talk about the rankings, I get why we talk about it as the process goes on,” McCaffery said. “But when all is said and done I think the most important ranking, the only one that matters, is at the end of the year.”
