Members of the Iowa football program have some shopping to do. And don’t forget that visit to an Outback Steakhouse near you.
Not only have the Hawkeyes earned a trip to sunny, warm Tampa Fla., for the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, at least 125 participants receive a lot of swag, according to sportsbusinessdaily.com.
The NCAA puts a $550 limit on gifts to players, and each game’s handouts vary. But the Hawkeyes are heading to one of 15 bowl games that will give away Fossil watches and one of 18 that include a gift suite and/or a shopping trip.
Some bowls splurge on electronics, while others are more practical. The Las Vegas (Dec. 21), Beef ‘O’ Brady’s (Dec. 23), Texas (Dec. 27), and Compass (Jan. 4) bowls, for instance, will give each participant a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, while you could score a Playstation 4 if you’re with Marshall or Maryland and head to the Military Bowl (Dec. 27). Purchasing in bulk for cheaper helps bowls meet the $550 limit for such items.
But if you’re Bowling Green or Pittsburgh and head to Detroit for the Little Caesars Bowl, a Timely Watch, leather luggage and a football are in your future. Heading to the Sun Bowl with Virginia Tech or UCLA? Your gifts include a Helen of Troy hairdryer (free Christmas present for the girlfriend!).
And for the record, for making the BCS National Championship Game in Pasadena (Jan. 6), Florida State and Auburn score Fossil watches, New Era 59Fifty hats and Oakley Flak Pack XL backpacks.
