Is Friday’s Cy-Hawk basketball bigger than 2013 Cy-Hawk football?

[ 0 ] December 10, 2013 |

I heard people discussing Friday night’s Iowa-Iowa State men’s basketball game, which starts at 8:30 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

Some were saying that this year’s basketball game is bigger than the most recent Iowa State-Iowa football game.

It’s the first time since Dec. 19, 1987 that the rivals have met as rated opponents. That game lived up to the hype: the 20th-ranked Cyclones upset the No. 7 Hawkeyes, 102-100 in overtime, thanks to Lafester Rhodes’ 54-point splash.

Now, Iowa State is ranked 17th and Iowa is 23rd. Hilton is sold out. It’s an NCAA Tournament resume game for both teams, who enter the game with a combined 17-1 record.

So now the discussion turns to you: Is Friday night’s basketball game bigger than last September’s Cy-Hawk football game?

If so, why? How important is the game to each of the teams? Will this year’s game live up to the teams’ rankings?
