TAMPA, Fla. — Senior Tanner Miller will play his final game at free safety Wednesday against LSU in the Outback Bowl.
Who will replace him?
One candidate is Jordan Lomax, who started at right cornerback in Iowa’s first game of the season against Northern Illinois but was injured.
Freshman Desmond King stepped in as a starter the following week against Missouri State and never gave up his spot.
“(Lomax) has taken a few reps at free safety just in the last month,” Miller said. “After bowl preps. we’ll see how that develops. (John) Lowdermilk played free safety before he moved to strong safety, so he knows the position.
“Then you’ve got Anthony Gair (a redshirt freshman). He’s making strides, too. So we’ll see what happens. I think the future is bright in the secondary.”
Iowa loses Miller and cornerback B.J. Lowery from the secondary in 2014. Lomax, who missed the entire 2012 season after shoulder surgery, is listed as Lowery’s backup on the latest depth chart. Lomax has also played on special teams this season.
