TAMPA, Fla. — Louisiana State entered Wednesday’s Outback Bowl with two 1,000-yard receivers in Odell Beckham, Jr., and Jarvis Landry.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz called the two juniors future NFL receivers. Both are expected to declare for the NFL Draft later this week.
That was the talent challenge facing Iowa freshman right cornerback Desmond King, who left an impression on both Tigers.
“He’s good,” said Beckham, who had two catches for 35 yards. “I feel as if the sky is the limit for him. I really wish him the best of luck as he develops.”
Landry had two catches for 21 yards in the Tigers’ 10th victory.
“He’s going to be a great player,” Landry said of King.
The rookie is not as good, Landry said, as some of the best cornerbacks he played against in the SEC this season.
“At the same time, he’s good,” Landry said. “You can’t take that away from him.”
King had six tackles, one for a loss, against LSU. He finished fifth on the team with 69 tackles.
“There are certain things you think you see coming during the out-of-season,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “But that was certainly one we didn’t anticipate we’d see.
“For a true freshman to come in and play the way he did shows an awful lot. He competed hard (Wednesday) against outstanding receivers, as good as you’re going to see. Desmond really did a good job. We’re excited to have him back for three.”
King, from Detroit, stepped into the starting lineup in the second game of the season after Jordan Lomax was injured in the opener against Northern Illinois. He never lost his spot.
B.J. Lowery, who ended his career as Iowa’s starting left cornerback Wednesday, took King under his wing and helped him develop.
Ferentz does not permit true freshmen to speak to the news media, so King wasn’t available to talk about his Outback performance. But Lowery spoke for him.
“Once (Lomax) went down, he really stepped up,” Lowery said. “He’s always been a playmaker for us, even in practice. His confidence has grown. As a freshman, you’re not too sure what’s going on on the big stage. I think he’s ready for the big stage now.”
