For the third time this season, the Iowa wrestling team will face a top-10 opponent when it travels to eighth-ranked Nebraska on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
So far, the results have been mixed against top-10 foes.
Top-ranked Penn State crushed the Hawkeyes 24-12 on Dec. 21 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but then Iowa did the same thing to No. 5 Oklahoma State, winning 24-6 on Jan. 10 at home.
Third-ranked Iowa has won six in a row against Nebraska, including the last three in Lincoln. Iowa prevailed 24-9 on its last trip to Lincoln on Jan. 13, 2012.
Iowa’s top-ranked Derek St. John (20-0) is expected to meet No. 3 James Green (21-0) in a marquee matchup at 157 pounds. St. John, a former West High standout, has a 2-1 record against Green.
However, Green won their most recent match 5-4 in the semifinals of the 2013 Big Ten Championships. St. John had won the previous two matches by identical 6-4 scores.
Junior Brody Grothus will look to continue his hot streak for Iowa at 149 pounds when he faces Nebraska’s fifth-ranked Jake Sueflohn. Brothus has won three consecutive matches against top-10 opponents, but he lost 8-0 against Sueflohn in last year’s dual meet in which Iowa prevailed 31-7 on Feb. 10, 2013 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
