Chris Street’s free-throw record still safe

[ 0 ] January 19, 2014 |

IOWA CITY, Ia. — Sunday marked the 21st anniversary of the death of Iowa junior forward Chris Street. He passed away on Jan. 19, 1993, in an automobile accident in the outskirts of Iowa City.

Street had an active streak of 34 made free throws, a school record, when he died. Iowa forward Aaron White got to 19 straight before missing one late in Sunday’s 94-73 victory against Minnesota. White has made 22 of 23 free throws over the past three games.

“I wanted to break the record,” said White, a junior forward whose style of play has been compared to Street’s. “I’ve still got time.”

White is now shooting 85.7 percent from the line this season. He shot 74.8 last season and 69.9 percent as a freshman.
