Michigan State star forward Adreian Payne is doubtful for Tuesday’s Big Ten basketball game at Iowa, coach Tom Izzo said today. Payne, who is averaging 16.2 points and 7.7 rebounds, has missed the last four games with a sprained foot.
“I don’t know if it’s a couple of weeks, but he’s day-to-day,” Izzo said. “He ran yesterday a little bit more, with more weight on it, but he’s very doubtful for tomorrow. How he does Wednesday and Thursday will determine the rest of the week.”
The Spartans, 18-2 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play, have a non-conference game against Georgetown in New York City on Saturday. The Spartans are also without forward Branden Dawson, who broke a hand last week.
Iowa, 16-4 and 5-2, will be trying to win a 21st straight game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which would tie a school record for the 32-year-old facility. Michigan State is undefeated away from home this season.
“I have great respect for them, great respect for Franny (Iowa coach Fran McCaffery) and the job he’s done,” Izzo said.
Tomorrow’s game tips off at 6 p.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPN. The game is sold out.
