\Former University of Iowa standout Erik Sowinski ran a 1:46.67 anchor leg on an American 4×800 relay team that set a new world indoor record of 7:13.11 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix meet Saturday in Boston.
Sowinski, Duane Solomon, David Torrence and Richard Jones broke the old record of 7:13.94 set on the same track by a foursome that included former Northern Iowa NCAA champion Joey Woody.
Woody, an assistant at Iowa, now coaches Sowinski.
“Coach Woody had it before me,” said Sowinski, who held off a late charge by Mike Rutt on the last lap. “I knew Mike raced yesterday (1:46.71 for 800 meters at Boston University), so I had to break him in the first 400.”
