Kirk Ferentz on late father-in-law, depth chart, injuries

[ 0 ] April 23, 2014 |

Gerry Hart, father-in-law of Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz, died last week. A memorial service will be held for Hart, a salesman by trade and 10-year NFL official, next month.

“He really had a great life,” Ferentz said. “He was a great father-in-law. “

Ferentz, married to Hart’s daughter, Mary, said that his father-in-law had plenty of stories and a zest for life.

“His job was to entertain people and play golf,” Ferentz said. “He was good at sales, don’t get me wrong. That (golf) was part of sales. I think the thing about Gerry is that he had a good time doing what he was doing.”

The Hawkeyes released their latest depth chart Wednesday, and there isn’t any shakeup among the starters. Ferentz, however, indicated changes are possible.

No QB controversy: Rudock a clear No. 1

“We have some positions that are kind of obvious and others that you just switch names around,” he said. “It really is going to be a pretty fluid process. We have some great competition going on and I think we’ll know more in August where we are on things.”

One interesting lineup tweak: Redshirt freshman Boone Myers began spring drills as the backup left tackle. He is now No. 2 at left guard.

Ferentz said freshman tight end Jon Wisnieski suffered a knee injury last week and will be sidelined through the summer. Wisnieski, a Dowling graduate, is scheduled to have surgery next week.
