A University of Iowa backup wrestler has been charged with taking an SUV without the vehicle owner’s consent.
Iowa City police say 23-year-old Ethan D. Owens, of Iowa City, was at an after party at 900 N. Dodge St. that went into the early hours of April 19.
When the party concluded at about 4 a.m., Owens allegedly took the keys to a Ford Explorer parked in the driveway and drove away in the vehicle, according to police. The vehicle’s owner, who was sleeping when Owens took the SUV, told police he had never met Owens, police say.
Police say Owens was contacted later that day by phone and hinted to the vehicle’s whereabouts but denied taking the SUV. The vehicle was found soon after parked at 29 W. Burlington St., unlocked with the keys in it, according to police.
A junior, Owens wrestles at 141 and posted a 19-5 record during the 2013-14 season. He was not a regular in the starting lineup.
Owens was booked Thursday morning in the Johnson County Jail. He has been charged with operating a vehicle without consent, an aggravated misdemeanor.
