PTL commissioner Randy Larson confirmed Friday morning that Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson will allow his players, which includes former West High standouts Jeremy Morgan and Wyatt Lohaus, to participate in the summer league.
Two of the seven PTL sessions on June 26 and July 17 will be held at the Cedar Valley Sportsplex in Waterloo. The other five sessions will be held at the air-conditioned North Liberty Community Center. There is no cost for admission.
Jacobson quit having his players participate in the PTL in 2012 because he said it was too time consuming in the wake of the NCAA passing new legislation that allowed coaches to have more practice time with players during the summer.
Larson said Iowa coach Fran McCaffery wanted the UNI players to participate in the PTL enough that he was willing to allow his players to travel to Waterloo for two sessions.
“When Ben (Jacobson) told me he was interested in playing again, I was delighted to work out a schedule that would work for them and for Iowa,” Larson said. “Fran wanted them to play and was willing to ask his players to travel two of the nights, so it all worked out.
“It’ll give Iowa and UNI fans in the northern part of the state an increased chance to see great players from both schools play in the summer. I love the players going up against each other from the two schools and just as much I like them being teammates, too.”
The PTL draft will be held on June 15 with the games being held each Thursday from June 19 to July 31. There will be six teams in the league and the games will start at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
Larson said he expects to have 13 players from both Iowa and Northern Iowa participating this summer. That includes Iowa’s three incoming recruits: point guard Trey Dickerson, incoming freshman forward Dominique Uhl and incoming freshman shooting guard Brady Ellingson.
“With 13 UNI players and 13 incoming or present Hawkeyes, that’s more than four per team so the talent will be really high and the games should be exciting,” said Larson, who started the PTL in 1987. “And it’s always great to see the incoming players and evaluate where they might help their team this winter. We don’t know yet about former Hawkeyes but I imagine a few of them will play, too.”
PTL tryouts will be held at 11 a.m. on June 15 at the UI Field House South Gymnasium.
