Iowa men’s golf sixth after first day of NCAA Regional

Iowa and Iowa State are both just off the NCAA Finals qualification pace after the first day of play at the Columbia (Mo.) Regional.

The Hawkeyes are in a share of sixth place at a cumulative total of 3-over 291. Iowa State is two strokes further back in eighth place at 5-over 293. Oklahoma State leads with a 16-under total of 272 at The Club at Old Hawthorne.

The top five teams and top five individuals not on a qualifying team reach the NCAA Championships from May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan.

Individually, both Iowa and Iowa State and a pair of golfers shoot even-par rounds of 72. Raymond Knoll and Carson Schaake of the Hawkeyes, along with Scott Fernandez and Ruben Sondjaja of the Cyclones, are all tied for 12th.

The three-round tournament runs through Saturday.
