Seth Wallace, hired Thursday as Iowa’s football recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, is well-versed in everything Iowa.
The son of Grinnell College athletic director and former football coach Greg Wallace, Seth was a running back at Grinnell High School and a wide receiver and kick returner at Coe College, where he was a four-year starter and a two-time all-Iowa Conference selection. He completed his eligibility in the top three in yards receiving in a game, season and career at Coe. After graduating in 2001, he also got his coaching start on the Kohawk staff and remained for two seasons.
Wallace later spent the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons as a graduate assistant at Iowa. He spent a majority of his time working with the secondary. He received a Master’s degree in sports management at Iowa in 2008.
Wallace then went to Valdosta State, where he was defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, including an NCAA Division II national championship team in 2012. He also coached the defensive line in 2013 and defensive backs from 2009 to 2012.
“We are excited to have Seth return to Iowa,” Ferentz said in a statement released by the athletic department. “Seth did a tremendous job here as a graduate assistant and has distinguished himself serving in several roles at Valdosta State. Seth is an excellent teacher, highly organized, knowledgeable and is an outstanding person. We are thrilled to welcome Seth and Erica back to Iowa.”
Wallace’s wife, Erica, is a native of Mount Pleasant. They have a 3-year-old son, Landry.
The release did not specify what position Wallace will coach at Iowa, but his background is on the defensive side of the ball. He replaces Eric Johnson, an original member of Ferentz’s staff, who stepped down in April to operate a Culver’s franchise in suburban Nashville, Tenn. Johnson was Iowa’s recruiting coordinator for the last 10 seasons. He also coached the defensive line, tight ends and linebackers during his time with the Hawkeyes.
“My wife and I, along with our son Landry, are excited to be rejoining the Iowa football family,” Wallace said. “Coach Ferentz, coach Norm Parker and coach Phil Parker provided a wonderful opportunity for me in 2006 when I began my graduate assistantship. I am thankful to coach Ferentz for the opportunity to return, and I look forward to working alongside the coaching staff in the future.”
